- On the 19th of January in the year 1903 a terrible thunderstorm raged through the the west of Ireland. It came unexpectedly. At 12:30 p.m. a faint rumbling of thunder was heard, it was followed by vivid flashes of lightning.A man named Pat Higgins from this locality was killed with a flash of lightning while driving a horse and cart down the streets of Ballina. The storm ceased at 2 p.m.. It caused a lot of destruction throughout the West of Ireland.Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
