  1. On each side of the present main road between Sligo and Bundoran are several forts. All of them are round and surrounded in every case by sloe bushes. They are called by the one name only, "forts." In former times the road ran nearer to the sea, roughly 400 yards or so near the sea, than it does at present. where the road was then, the forts all lay towards the mountain side or towards the south side of the road. Formerly they were all on one side: presently some are on each side.
