  1. During the squaring it happened, now and then, that a man got a big strip. He might not be able to pay rent. If this was the case, the landlord took over the farm, and paid the tenants passage to America. Hence the term above.
    The land was given then to whoever was able to pay the rent arrears preferable to the man next to farm.
