    out to dry on a pasture field, care been taken not to allow the heads and tails of sheaves to get mixed together, this was done to bleach it. When well bleached, it was carefully taken and tied into sheaves or small bundles. Then it was taken into a barn and beetled. The beetling was done by means of washstops. These were pieces of timber about 2' long, flat on the bottom and having a handle overhead to make to make easy for handling. When well beetled, it was scutched and hackled. The hackling was this:
    A piece of board with teeth out like a rake or comb. The flex was
