- Three meals was general in olden times; one about 8, one at 2, and one when work was done. It was usual to do some work before breakfast. They people rose before at sunrise and worked until 8 or so. It made no difference, it may be cutting or saving hay, potatoes, or churning. The latter was very common. The meal consisted of potatoes, roasted, along with butter and buttermilk. It was either that or oatmeal bread with buttermilk.
The dinner consisted of fish - fresh when in season and salted ones at other times. These were their own salting either caught by themselves,(continues on next page)
