  1. Long ago starch could not be got in shops and it was necessary for the people to make their own starch out of potatoes.
    First of all the potatoes were grated into a clean vessel and cold water was poured in.
    The grated potatoes and the water were left in the vessel for an hour. After that the contents of the vessel were strained into another vessel, and warm water was poured over it.
    Then the starch was made.
