There was a woman and her baby ther long ago. The woman was sitting near the fire and she had the baby in her lap. There was a pot of boiling on the fire, and the woman was sitting in a chair. When a clad was thrown at her she left the child down in the flag near the fire, and she ran out to see who was firing the clads at her, but she could not see any one there. She came in again, and she was only inside the door when another clad was thrown at her, and she went out again, and there was no one there. When she came inside a clad hit the chair, and she took the child in her arms and went out to the door, but there was no one outside. When she came in the pot of water was spilled where the child was sitting, and that was a token that she would save her child.

There was a man there long ago, and he commited a most awful crime, So he was to be hanged. The day of the hanging the judge told him that if he would make up a riddle he would forgive him. That man asked the judge how long would he give him. "Three years", answered the judge. So the man went home. About a week the man had a mare that was going to foal, and she died. So he opened the mare, and saved the fole. He raired the foal as a pet and he went to the court. The judge was on the bench, and he called him in. "No", said the man, "come down let you". So out went the two men. "Here is a horse that never had a mother, and here is the gam in my hand, and under earth I am". Then the man explained it to the judge.
