  1. Once upon a time there lived an old man named Michael who had rented a few acres of land. He had a wife and family to support out of his small holding. His wife could mind the children, milk their one cow, boil potatoes and carry the eggs which the hens laid to the market.
    One year all the crops which Michael owned failed and he had not enough to pay even half the rent of his farm.
    One day his wife told him to take the only cow he had to the fair and sell her. At twelve o'clock next day he set out getting a warning from his wife not to part with the cow except for the highest penny. He had not gone far when he met a dwarf. The diminutive little creature asked asked Michael where was he going to sell her, and
