    John Portus was a major from 1864.
    He was far more entitled than his landlord Major Gore
    He was led by rifle men and believe me it is true,
    By which he got his title "The Pole of Abbey View.
    II
    The pole is here for many a year I hear the people say,
    Until the true sons of Paddy's land had had chanced to come that way
    They swore an oath and a mighty oath, the pole they'd cut it down
    They cut the pole and tore its flags and tramped them on the ground.

    The place of habitation I am sure it lies far off
    There are some of them from America and some from Kiltamagh
    Some of them from Abbey Vale and some
