Where Denis Gallagher's house now stands on the shore of Lough Easkey long ago a man called John Gallagher lived there.
One day he was about to do some ploughing but he could not find his horses. He was in the field and as he looked down at the lake he saw two white horses on the shore. He went down and brought them up and he worked all day with them. In the evening he went down with them to the lake shore and struck them with the bridle. They brought him through the lake and smashed his body to pieces. Nothing was found of him only his heart floating over the water. This is the reason that the lake is called "Loch Croide".
