  1. Houses of long ago
Long ago there were no windows or chimneys in houses. If there was a window, rent was raised. If there was a chimney it was raised 4 times as much. If a man's daughter was getting married and he to give her money as fortune his rent was raised. If his wife was seen with a new shawl or shoes his rent was raised also.
This accounts for poverty long ago.
