- Marriages usually take place between Christmas and Lent. No marriages take place during lent. When James McGowan of Ballyeskin, James Doherty of Ballyglass and John Watson of Dunbeakin, they raced home on horseback. The husband and wife usually got home first. If any of the guests that were asked to the marriage got home first, he would get a pint of poteen.
