When they reached home he said to them that they had now reached manhood & besides had broken their agreement with him - therefore they must leave & make out for themselves. Before leaving he gave each boy, as a parting gift, a fox, a hare, a badger & a bear, and a peculiar kind of knife. He accompanied them to a crossroads, at which a tree was growing. He told each boy to stick his knife to the haft in this tree. The boys did as they were told. ‘Now,” said he, "you will always remember each other no matter where you are. Each will know when the other is in trouble or in grave danger - or seriously ill. When one of you feels that the other is in danger or ill, come to this tree, examine his knife & if the blade is rusted only - he is in danger. If the whole knife is rusted - he is dead. He also told them that they would find their animals very useful to them. They said Goodbye to the man & thanked him for all his kindness to them. He returned home & Billy & Jack set off(continues on next page)
