- (continued from previous page)for Sligo & he & the girl went on board he working his way as a sailor. She helped in the cooking for the men. When they arrived in Sligo they settled down in a little house there. She was an expert needlewoman, good at sewing and embroidery & soon her fame spread all over the town & she got more work than she was able to do. By her skill she earned more money than was sufficient for their own needs. One evening he came in & told her that a boat was leaving for a certain port & that he had signed on for the voyage - but that she was to remain in Sligo till he returned. The night before he left she brought him a beautifully embroidered waistcoat on which were embroidered all the birds in the air & all the fishes in the sea. She told him he was not to wear this waistcoat till he was within two days of landing & then he was to put it on. She also told him that it was her father who was inspector or harbour master or in charge of that port. Part of his business was to scrutinise or examine each person(continues on next page)
