much heavier than if it were full of milk. He wondered if the taking of the coal while the people were churning had anything to do with the change in the jar & its contents.
On his way home that evening he called into the house where he got the coal in the morning. He told her about the jar & how he could get not milk out of it. etc. & he asked her if anything peculiar happened to her churning. She told him that her churning was a failure & that she churned & churned but no butter came. He produced the jar & said he believed her butter was in the jar. He asked her to get a "Keeler". He put the jar into it & smashed it with the tongs. & sure enough there was the missing butter. The jar was almost full to the top. He told the woman that he must have taken her butter unintentionally & now he was giving it back again. The woman after that had the butter on her churning as usual.
