  1. Doctor Neddrey, a Scotchman, came over and got possession of Rathgoonane. On a May morning he evicted fourteen tenants from their homes. With the stones of their houses he built a house, which with additions in later times is the house in which the present James McGowan lives. He brought over from Scotland a man called Stokes and his wife and put Stokes in as steward. Some time after Neddrey died and his wife and daughter came to Rathgoonane. She got possession of Campcuill and built a very fine house there, overlooking the Easkey. She and her young daughter lived there. Mrs. Neddrey employed many men to work for her and paid them at the rate of sixpence or eight pence a day and feed themselves. After a short time Mrs. Neddrey introduced the first of the 'Black Ladies' to Rathgoonane - a Miss Simpson
