- Lireragh, Co. Sligo was one of the most planted districts in Ireland. being the pass between north and west. One of these planter families was named Fenton and lived in Dromore House Dromore West. The last of the Fentons died about 80 years ago. Like most of the descendants of the planter stock he was most tyrannical and was especially averse to man or beast trespassing on his lands. He had one very 'faithful' servant named Taidg Doudican who lived in a little house on the property . The remains of this house are still to be seen. Now Fenton was bad enough by nature but was made doubly so by the stories carried to him by this servant. When Fenton died a curious thing happened. On the night after Fenton's burial, the servant who was now old was sitting in the hob alone in his little house. He heard a fierce peculiar noise as if rattling chains coming from The Big House across the fair-green, towards his shanty. Nearer and nearer it came-ip to the door and in came Mr. Fenton and sat on the opposite hob. The old servant became so terrified that he could not move but sat(continues on next page)
