  1. The Kelp Industry
Up to a few years ago there was a big industry in this district, called the 'Kelp Industry' The people here around the shore earned much money each Spring and Summer by burning seaweed to make the 'kelp'. In the Winter they gathered the sea-weed and 'slara-mara' and filled them up in heaps. When Spring came they burned it in kilns and made the Kelp. There has been no kelp made during the last three years.
