- Long ago, there was no starch in the shops as there is now, and therefore the people had to make their own starch. They made it from potatoes. This is how they made it.The people got potatoes and washed and cleaned them as clean as possible. Then they got a big basin and they took each potato separately and grated it with a grater, into the basin. Then they emptied the basin into a fine cloth and they squeezed the juice into a bowl, When they needed starch they boiled the potato juice. In those days the people used to make boxtie. When the starch was made they used to make out of the refuse, left after the juice of the potatoes(continues on next page)
