  1. As late as seventy years ago, there was no such think as wall-backed or table-lamps in poor country-houses. The people had little crockery jars something larger then an ordinary ink-bottle. They used to get a piece of tin the shape of a pencil-case made from the thinker. They ran a piece of rag through the case, and it was put into the jar of oil as a wick. Those people only used these lamps on very rare occasions. They had no better light than the light from bog fir burning brightly on the hearth.
