  1. Torch-making was a great industry, in this district. The people gathered fir in the bogs. They left it beside a fire until it was quite dry. Then they put the fir into a sod of turf and the sod was as good as a candle-stick.
    Sometimes these torches were sold at markets in Ballina or Sligo.
