There was a man who went to buy a pair of shoes, and when he went into the shop he produced a rod.

There was a man who went to buy a pair of shoes, and when he went into the shop he produced a rod.
He found a pair just the length of the rod. He paid for them, and brought them home. They were much too small.
A few days afterwards, he returned them, and brought a different rod. He measured a pair and they were the length of the rod, bought them and took them home.
The result was no better : still they were much too small.
A third day he came to the shop, returning the last pair, so the shop-man said : "Who do you want the shoes for?
"For myself, of course," said the man.
"Have you your feet with you?" said the shopman.
    "I have" whispered the man.
"Then come and try on the shoes and you will get fitted" which he did, and went home with a light step, heart, and pocket.
