  1. Folklore Cures
    Long ago the people had very few doctors. They had a great many cures for their ailments. They used to put tobacco leaves and saltpetre in their mouths for tooth ache. They used to boil coarse salt and hold it in their mouths for some time.
    The cure they had for a sty in the eye was to get a piece of a gooseberry bush with ten thorns and to point nine of them to the stye and throw away the tenth one and say certain prayers. The cure the old people had for chincough was to drink a ferrit's leavings and an ass's milk. Another cure was to get out on the road and if you met a man riding on a white horse and anything he would tell you to give was supposed to be the cure.
    They used to go to the river with a creel or a bag and catch a trout against the water. They believed that if you drank three drops
