    Once upon a time there lived a very poor woman and her son, Jack.

    Once upon a time there lived a very poor woman and her son, Jack. One day he was out cutting oats and a little man gave him a handfull of corn and told him to set it when he went home.
    When he went home he set it in the garden. Then he told his mother all the news and she was delighted and they were waiting for the morning to come to see what would happen.
    When they got up in the morning there was a big, tall stalk going up into the clouds. Then when Jack saw it was so tall he said to himself -
    "I will go into the top of it until I see what it is like up there." Then Jack set off and he
