  1. One night two men went out torching. They came to the ditch of a fort in Timothy Fitzmaurice's land. They saw a blackbird up in the hedge. They tried to strike it with their sticks but they couldn't. After a while Ned Carthy went away, and the teller of this story stayed there, trying to kill the bird. He thought that Ned was with him all the time. In the morning he found out his mistake. There was no blackbird on the hedge, but a note and those words on it. Never go torching again or you'll have the worst of it.
