Irish Republican Army. It was the biggest burning the people of Ardfert ever remembered.
It was burnt before the English soldiers would take possession of it, and what was once a very beautiful mansion now stands in ruins. It was never since rebuilt and is not expected to be as the owners of it are in England.

Local Happenings

The epidmic of flue in 1919 was supposed to be nearly as bad as the famine in black 47. In most cases a whole family would be sick at the same time with nobody to care for them.
The hospitals were full and no more could get away. Doctors were kept going night and day.
It was said that more people died all over the world from flu in that year than there were killed in the great war.
