There was a hedge school in John Buckley's field of Kilgarvan. A man named Bachal Stack that was teaching in it. They had blocks of timber to sit on. They had no black-boards only slates. They had to pay a penny to the master each day. They had school only during the winter months. Each night the master was kept in one of the scholar's house. The school remained there from the year 1882, to 1886. The school was a Catholic one.
