- Long ago people usually got married during Shrove. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays were considered unlucky days for marriage. Those contracted during the harvest were also considered unlucky.
Newly married parties who went away from home in Shrove were supposed to be back again before mid-night on Shrove Tuesday. Matches were made and money was given for land.
