Monasteries
The Franciscans established monasteries in Ardfert, Muckross, and Lisloughtin. There are also other abbey and some of these are one in Tralee built by the Dominicans one in O'Dorney by the Cistercians. There is also a monastery in Inisfallen. These were built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries There are also monasteries in Kilcolman near Milltown, Rattoo and Derrynane. All these were destroyed in the reign of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth. The nearest monastery ruin to us is Lisloughtin near Ballylongford about eight miles from here. It was founded by O'Conor Kerry in 1470 and was destroyed by Cromwellians and three priests were put to death. Inisfallen was endowed and protected by the McCarthys. Brian Born was taught there. It was founded by St. Finian Lobhar the Leper. The monastery and school were celebrated and lasted till Henry VIII.
