  1. They gathered a large quantity of thistles and put them in a heap. Afterwards they set fire to them. When all the thistles burned there was a heap of black ashes left. They gathered all the ashes carefully and put them into a tin. Next they melted washing-soda in a pot. When it was melted they stirred in the ashes. They again put it on the fire to thicken. When they took it off they shaped it into several bars of soap.
    This soap was very good especially for boiling linen. It whited the linen and put a great shine on it.
