In the reigns of Elizabeth and James I the Irish Catholics suffered most severely by the destruction of their religious institutions, but no place suffered as much as the land of the O'Rourkes, not a single place of worship having escaped destruction from Donegal Bay to Johnston's Bridge. In the succeeding reigns of Charles I, Cromwell, Charles II and James (II) the Irish showed indomitable pluck and undaunted on many a hard contested battle-field, the Leitrim men coming in at the critical moment and turning probable defeat into certain victory. Ireland lost by her loyalty to British Sovereigns, but it was not until the surrender of Limerick on 23rd September, 1691, that the longest night of woe and suffering fell upon Ireland.
