  1. Once upon a time there lived an old woman and her son at Lough Gill in County Sligo. They were very poor and they had one cow. They had a little plot in which they had potatoes growing.
    They used to cut brooms and sell them in the market in Sligo. One day she sent her son to cut them. When he had a good deal cut he was tired, and he sat down to rest. He had his cow eating grass beside him too.
    When he was there a while he saw a lot of fairies playing ball. The boy began saying that the fellow with the red cap was the best.
    When some of the others heard him saying it they got vexed
