  1. Aroused from sleep at early dawn
On Christmas eve was Peter born
A knock came to his window sill
Close followed by the words I'm chill
I have been all the night astray
From evenings dusk to break of day
And though to no one here akin
I hope to be admitted in.
Old Peter answered "woe is me
    This day completes my misery
Though weak and worn down with age
On me the tyrant wants his rage
This nights repose I am denied
Here where my father lived and died
A case more sad was never known
For I am helpless and alone
Alas my children all but one
Are many years both dead and gone
And he that still does life retain
    Will never her return again
