- When the French were on their way from Castlebar Co. Mayo to Ballinamuck Co. Longford they passed through the village of Cloone and the leaders stayed on enight in Father Conefry's and that night the chains that they had for drawing the guns were stolen. On this account they decided to shoot any man they saw from Cloone to Ballinamuck.
They saw a man working in a field from where Pat Mulvey's home is now. The field where this man was working is now in Jimmy Cunningham's land. This mans name was Cannon. He was buried in the corner of the field and there was a keep of stones put over his grave.
I have heard myself that it was Major West of Cloone who paid the man who stole the chains. According to Thomas Mitchell Drumcory it was a man named Keegan who stole the chains.(continues on next page)
