  1. In my district, John Forde is still living that was put to jail for stealing his own turf. About sixty years ago, Lord Leitrim would not allow the tenants but cut only a certain amount of turf. They had to have them off the bog within a cerain period. This poor man was not able to get them off the bog within the time. When the few he had at the house were burned out, he went down to the bog in the night to bring up some of his turf. A bailiff saw him, and brought the news to the Landlord. When the Landlord heard it, he brought the man into court. The man got one month in jail.
