  1. First, ripe sloes are gathered. Then a bottle is filled with them and water is put in. Then a few spoonfuls of sugar is added. Then the bottle is buried for a fortnight and after that it used to be drank by the people. The people used to drink it on St. Swithen's day and by doing this they thought that they would have good crops.
