- My father found two querns in the bog about three years ago. Those qurns were used to grind corn for the people long ago. He also found a clay pipe in the bog which had a very long shank. There was a harp on one side of it and a shamrock on the other and a long tail hanging from the bottom. There were yankies home in our house and the pipe was such a novelty that they brought it back with them. There was a firkin of butter found down deep in the Derreen bog by John Shanley.A man in my district found a resin candle stand, with a pinchers on one side of it and a brass ring on the other. The pinchers was for holding the resin candle and the ring for holding the rush candle. It was beautifully carved in wood. His name was Tommie Winters and he found them in a roof of a dwelling house.
