  1. Long ago there was an old hedge school situated in the town land of Tulrush in an old rushy field of Patrick Gray's. The name of this school was the hunt of the field.
    School was not taught in doors, it was taught in the open air at the back of the hedge. The master that in the school was James Patrick Gill. He lived a mile outside Carrick-on-Shannon. The master did not lodge in the farmer's houses. There was a very old house built in the middle of the field and the master lodged in it.
    The master was very poorly paid for instructions he gave every other week they used to bring him food this week and as much money the next week as their parents could afford him.
    The subjects that was taught was English, Latin, French and Greek and Arithmetic was done also. Writing was done
