  1. The houses in my district long ago were made of clay and bricks. The roof of the houses were thatched with rushes, I never heard of slated houses in that time.
    The rushes were cut for the thatch in the fields but before the house was thatched the rushes were let dry.
    The old houses had a bed in the kitchen, which was placed against the side-wall.
    Those beds were mostly called press-beds and settle-beds.
