    Hedge schools existed at one time or another at

    Cloonee, taught by a Mistress, who afterwards married Jeremiah Johnston, Mohill
    Farnaught, where disused Protestant school now stands taught by Master Lalor. Afterwards rumoured to Beighy, near bridge, where Mass was also celebrated.
    These were sometimes called fenny schools owing to the fact that on Monday morning the scholars had to bring money to pay teacher. This varied from one penny for lowest class, upwards. The three Rs were taught, and the "Universal" was the favourite book. There is no record that Irish was
