The number who repair boots in this district is the same as was in former years. Shoemakers are not as plentiful as in former years, as they do no trade. The factories turn out boots in mass production and therefore they are much cheaper.
Clogs were worn locally in former years but they are not very common nowadays. The soles of the clogs were made at a saw-mill near Charlestown, Co Leitrim, and the clogs were completed in a factory near Boyle, Co Roscommon.
Leather was not made in this district. In olden times people wore untanned hides to protect their feet. The people were not then able to buy boots as they were poor.
