  1. Over two hundred years ago there was an old thatched school in Mullaghboy It was known as the "Stony School", because there was a row of stones along the walls. for seats. John Flynn from Gortnaguillion taught in it. The teacher lodged in the school until Saturday. Then he went home until Monday morning. There was a bed in the corner of the school in which the master slept. Every child brought three pence weekly to the teacher in payment for his teaching. This is the only payment he received. In this school, Geography, Reading, Writing, and Latin were taught. Writing was done with a slate pencil on a slate. The books used were a Geography, Catechism, and an English reader.
