    Long and long ago it was. There was a poor widow and her son; they were getting it very hard to make ends meet. One day, Jack said to his mother that he would go to seek his fortune. His mother thought it very sad to see him leaving; but she baked an oat-cake for him and off he went. He travelled all day but found no work.
    The next morning he was very hungry - and coming on to night, he met a man riding a grey pony. The man told him, there was a palace on the top of the hill, and that the King's daughter was lying there, very ill.
