  1. About 400 years ago(?) the ice on the Shannon was about 3 feet thick here. Men crossed the river, with horses and carts while it lasted, and brought back loads of timber from the wood.
    The milk was frozen as hard as ice as soon as it was milked. They could not break the ice it was so thick, so cattle died in hundreds for want of water. Peoples breath was frozen. Butter was like a stone.
