  1. A few hundred years ago there was a man named Tom Stapleton, living in the parish of Mohill. He was a strong young man and a good card-player. He did no work but spent his time going to amusements. One day he met a man named Tadhg. Tadhg asked Tom to go to Mohill on the following Sunday and they would have a boxing match. The next night Tom went to a dance in Kilmore; On his way home he saw a little house - he knew he had never seen it before. He went in to light his pipe. There was an old woman sitting at the fire. Tom told that he was to box Tadhg on Sunday. She gave him a
