  1. Carrick-on-Shannon the town in which I live is situated in the parish of Kiltoghert and the Barony of Leitrim. It derives its importance from being the county town of Leitrim and got its name from the ford on the Shannon. In olden times there was a ford over the Shannon near the town which was very much used in trade and warlike expeditions between North and South.
    The town as it is to-day was principally built within the last hundred and fifty years. Previously
