  1. In ancient times many tales were told many of which were historical while others are mostly fictitious. But it is to be observed that even in the fictitious tales the main characters are nearly always historical or such as were considered so.
    Manus O'Donnell of Letterkenny was seized in 1798 by the crown forces. He was told that he would get a large sum of money and a free pardon if he would tell the secrets of his people. He refused to betray his race, even when tortured.
    Next year he was brought from prison and tried. Nothing could be proved against him.
