    called the three R's. When he taught in this district for a while he moved on to another district. Some of the children had slates to write on while others just sat and listened. The name of one of these hedge school master's was John Lougheed. Girls seldom got any learning they never went to the hedge school. They stayed at home and learned how to churn, to weave, how to milk cows and how to bake oaten cakes. Their mother taught them these things at home.
