- (continued from previous page)quarried and broken into still smaller stones, these are drawn in horse carts and laid in heaps near the kiln, then a large fire of coal and turf is kindled and where it is blazing up, the stones are shovelled in until the kiln is full, then some more coal is placed on top and this burns from above and the other fire burns from below and soon the kiln is one mass of flames. As the fire burns the lime is being formed and by degrees the little hard lumps mixed with the white powder or "slack" lime begins to fall into the kiln house underneath. When the stones are burned out and the lime is in the kiln house two men come to seive the lime - this is very tiring work as every gram of lime has to(continues on next page)
