    handle at each side - and when in use two men had to turn these handles.
    For butter firkins there was a standard size - a hundred and twelve pounds of butter had to fit into those firkins. For barrels the coopers charged about five pounds - which was a very big price considering that they can be got for about eight shillings at present, but a churn or firkin could be got for five shillings.
    The coopers were usually very busy in the Spring time and very often they did not go to bed until about three o'clock in the Spring and Summer time.
